UK Government delays re-opening of clubs and festivals for a month

Large-scale music events won’t take place until July 19th.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has decided to extend the lockdown in England by four weeks, stretching until July 19th, due to a recent spike in Covid-19 cases, suspectedly caused by the Delta variant of the virus. Originally, the lockdown was meant to be lifted on Monday, June 21st.

‘This obviously really hurts all venues in London and across the UK [that] have been working so hard to put in place plans that would mean [a] safe event environment for everyone,’ said Nathanael Williams, director of London club Colour Factory, when consulted about the new imposition. ‘At the same time, it’s understandable that we must be driven by making sure that the changes are truly irreversible.’

According to a BBC reporter, in a piece published in The Independent, it is estimated that 5,000 concerts may have to cancel as a result and many of the remaining clubs could close for good.
