5 key tips for remixing a track by Carl Cox

One of the most charming DJs in the business. A musical ambassador and a veteran of acid house, a champion of techno, a dance music pioneer, label owner, King of Ibiza – you name it, Carl’s been there and done it, never losing sight of his passions – playing music, breaking tunes.

Carl Cox just remixed Kenneth Bager feat. Jez Phunk’s ‘Farmacia (Homage To Frankfurt)’ on Armada Music and today he shares five key tips to remix a track.

1. Listen, listen, listen…

You have to be honest with yourself about whether you feel that you can really contribute something meaningful to the track. If it is something you are not into, then don’t do it.

2. Find the essence

I don’t always want to entirely change the track in my remixes, I look for the essence of the elements and try to enhance these.

3. Decide the rhythm

I decide where this is aimed for too… Is it for the main floor or at home or radio? And how can I bring my contribution to it into being in a way that really shines a light on the bits that I like about the track.

4. Make it work

When working on the beats, I always try to make the Kick and Bass work well together, get the underpinning groove right and you are away.

5. Less is more

Don’t over-compress.. don’t.. and keep listening…
