Queer, LA-based artist PENNYWILD has made her indelible mark as a creative polymath by directing music videos for artists such as Zedd and RL GRIME, choreographing shows at The Hollywood Bowl and Lollapalooza, performing on Broadway in West Side Story, and touring internationally with the musical.
As a solo artist, the dancer-turned-choreographer-turned-DJ/producer has similarly made waves by commanding the decks at globally-renowned festivals such as Coachella, SXSW, Splash House, and Lightning in a Bottle.
But at the heart of her far-flung creative endeavors lies PENNYWILD the producer – who released her debut EP MIDI In Motion last year via Dome of Doom and recently announced her forthcoming sophomore EP NIGHT PEOPLE.
The five-track EP, due out later this year, will serve as PENNYWILD’s love letter to underground – drag, rave, ball, and club culture. Today, PENNYWILD unveils the EP’s first single “SIDE STREETS” via Popgang Records.
“SIDE STREETS” is a bouncy, underground groove that follows PENNYWILD and her Queer clubgoer chums as they embark on a night out. Featuring candid vocal samples from actors like Adwin Brown (Netflix’s You) and Emmy Mattingly Chucker (Disney’s Liv & Maddie), “SIDE STREETS” encapsulates the euphoria and the chaos that ensues during a wild night out with your best friends.
In September, PENNYWILD will collaborate with Quasar Media and Alright Productions to release a print NIGHT PEOPLE Zine. The Zine will showcase stills and interactive/mixed media captured throughout one week of galavanting across Los Angeles nightspots, returning to the scene once left behind pre-Covid, and will feature some of the artists’ favorite LA style icons, drag queens, and musicians.
Before writing NIGHT PEOPLE, PENNYWILD won the hearts of music and dance fans everywhere with her own invention, the Penny Pad – a MIDI Controller powered by your feet that seamlessly marries Choreography with Music Creation. The Penny Pad is a sound arena built from the exploratory and complex world of footwork, where dancing onto unique technology becomes the fuel for music creation.
