Like the comet after which it was (likely) named, Wulfpack’s newest release ‘Kohoutek’ is sure to make an impact as one of their brightest shining releases over the past 9 years. David Scuba’s first release on the label has been deftly curated, with three carefully selected remixers (fellow San Diego artists Memo Rex and DJ IDeaL, and alpha pack member Chris Mindel) bringing depth and complimentary variation to the release alongside Scuba’s original sounds.
However, Scuba’s original track remains the most dazzling. If deep tech and minimal house and dub had a baby, its name would be ‘Kohoutek’. The rhythm is that of a minimal house tune, with a dubby baseline and a hypnotic arpeggiated melody panning, circling, and spiraling. Rising 80’s era pads make this track feel almost nostalgic and ethereal at the same time. It’s as if the birds are circling overhead on a perfectly sunny day with fluffy white clouds, a sea of blue above, and not a sound around but the melodies in ‘Kohoutek’ setting the scene.
The vocals carry the deep and soulful vibe even further and are greatly highlighted in Memo Rex’s remix. He takes the dub bass and breaks it up for a slightly lighter touch, throwing repetition and delay on and allowing for a more playful deep tech take on the original. By clear contrast, DJ IDeaL speeds up the track with a classic disco drive, and seasons this mix further with a saucy acid arp for melodic contrast on his acid house rendition.
Rounding out the collection, Chris Mindel provides a grooving remix with essential feel-good minimal house flavor. This remix stands out as one of his strongest tracks yet and displays the strength of one of Wulfpack’s core producers. Mindel finds the balance between the lightness of minimal rhythms, the beautiful melodies present in ‘Kohoutek’, and the carefree groove in this perfect daytime track. The release is sure to be a standout hit, with all 4 tracks coming together to provide a perfect representation of the sounds Wulfpack curates.
