IN 2021, WE ARE ALL STRANGERS NOW.
For more than a year now the pandemic has locked us down, disrupted lives, and isolated us from one another. If 2020 and 2021 have left you feeling fundamentally disconnected, you’re not alone.
In late 2020 multi-instrumentalist and producer Burnside relocated from Sydney to Berlin to start a career as a solo artist. He expected lockdown to have pushed the normally vibrant city into hibernation but wasn’t prepared for the pandemic to fundamentally change his approach to music.
His debut single ‘Strangers’ is infused with quarantine life in the German capital: “When I started writing ‘Strangers’ I reflected a lot on the feeling of disconnection that sets in after 6 months of isolation. But I also began to see COVID restrictions as interesting artistic constraints. I’m typically a collaborative artist, but I started thinking: how much can I DIY? If I can’t get in a room with a vocalist, can I teach myself to sing? If I can’t play a gig can I take a synth, a battery pack, and a camera and film myself jamming on a street corner? Luckily lockdown gave me the time to explore a lot of different avenues.”
The first result of this DIY exploration is due July 31 on the artist’s own imprint, Minimum Viable Records. Pulling together influences from minimal electronica, melodic techno, and post-rock to create a unique spin on modern dance music, the track fuses distorted guitar, finely crafted electronics, and driving beats into a groove ready for the post-pandemic dancefloors and stages of summer 2021.
Release date: July 31st, 2021.
