Vini Pistori: “I like to feel the dancefloor and lead the moment”

Vini Pistori had been circulating in the city of São Paulo since the age of 12, and in 2009 was already cited as a “self-made man” by Brazilian Mixmag. Self-taught, he delved into other strands of electronic music.

With his research, he was influenced by the groove and musicality of house and techno of the late 90’s, in addition to the progressive house of John Digweed and Sasha who were the references for his development. His sets are full of groove, musicality and percussion elements.

Electronic Groove: Hello, Vini. First, we would like to thank you for your mix for EG Spotlight series. Where are you right and what are you up to?

Vini Pistori: Hello guys, thanks for the invite. Right now I’m at home talking with you (laughs) and finishing some pre-masters to send to the label for my next release.

EG: Tell us a bit about your musical background. What are your first musical memories?

Vini Pistori: My first memories, by incredible that it seems, was when I was into my mom’s belly, of course, I don’t remember this, but I like it so much thanks to the classic music that my mom used to play for me before I was born. Others genres that I like are jazz, hip hop, indie, and some of my influential bands are Depeche Mode, Tears for Fears, Kraftwerk, Duran Duran, among others.

EG: When did you discover Electronic Music?

Vini Pistori: My first contact with electronic music was when I was 10 years old. First I discovered Drum’N’Bass through some friends. Then I attended Skolbeats Festival where I saw John Digweed and Sasha back-to-back and loved their performance, then I decided that I wanted that for me, produce music and DJ.

Electronic Groove: What have been some of the artists that influenced you the most and why?

Vini Pistori: The first one was Kraftwerk as they are pioneers, also Tears For Fears for their identity. Related to electronic music are Sasha for his musical identity, and Âme as he has a unique and different style.

EG: You just produced an EP that came out on Nereau Records titled ‘Galatic’. Can you give us an insight into the production process behind it?

Vini Pistori: I usually start doing a drum loop or I draw a melody, I try to improve it until I achieve what I want. In this EP I started with one arpeggio and used some plugins to bring harmonics and dirty sounds to the tracks. I’m always looking forward to doing something different and taking care of every detail.

EG: Are you currently working on new material?

Vini Pistori: Yes, I’m always working on new material. I can anticipate that I have some new releases coming soon on big labels and I’m anxious about it. One of them will be on Monaberry with the big guys of Super Flu, and the others I can’t share more details yet, but stay tuned.

EG: Related to your DJ sets, do you plan them meticulously? Or do you go move with the flow? What do you think it takes to be a good DJ?

Vini Pistori: I think the good DJ is the one who makes the dancefloor dance. Of course, with your identity and personality, strolling into different strand without losing your identity, bringing new tracks and playing classic sounds as well. I have my special tunes that I always carry with me. I don’t like to prepare a meticulous plan, I like to feel the dancefloor and lead the moment.

EG: What is your take on the use of CDjs vs Computers vs Vinyl? And what do you prefer and why?

Vini Pistori: I prefer vinyl and CDJs but I don’t have anything against the artists who use computers. About me, I prefer these two as I control them better.

EG: What are your plans for the rest of the season?

Vini Pistori: My plans are to work in music until the end of the year, prepare more tracks and develop my career in order to be more solid. That way my number of gigs should increase as well 🙂

Also, I want to help whoever I can in the way, whether on music or in anything that I can. Thank you so much and all the best! God bless you.
