An artist who perfectly captures her sophisticated, deep, soulful sound which has recently awarded her appearances at Space Ibiza, Burning Man, Secret Garden Party, and Cova Santa to name a few. Marymoon is far more than just emotive, deep tech sounds emanating from nightclub speakers. Her performance is reflective of a humble, compassionate soul with a pure passion for music and art, which she uses to connect deeply with her audience to create a genuinely interactive and beautiful experience.
Currently based in Mexico, the music producer, DJ, and visual artist graduated from the esteemed Sotheby’s Institute of Arts in London, then subsequently spent several years chasing an obsession with electronic sounds and digital visual arts performances around the globe. Now, she’s coming with a new EP, ‘Nalu’, full of creative energy channeled into 4 original gems.
We caught up with Marymoon to talk about her latest projects and new release ‘Nalu’ EP out now via Anathema Records.
Electronic Groove: Hi Maria! It’s an absolute pleasure to have you down with us for a chat. How are you doing? Where are you based right now?
Marymoon: I am great, thanks! I moved to Mexico 3 years ago to start a family and live by the beach in Todos Santos which is in Baja California Sur.
Electronic Groove: So, let’s dive right into your musical origins…How did you first connect with music and art? What was your experience at Sotherby’s Institute of Arts like?
Marymoon: My passion for art has been there since I was little. I was always drawn to painting. Music was a part of my life like any other kid growing up. In the background, and I went through various phases, but painting always remained my strongest passion. I guess that’s how I ended up in Sobethys.
Electronic Groove: How much of that experience and knowledge translates back into your music? How so?
Marymoon: My experience was very interesting, and it took me to London first, then NYC, and then it leads to Burning Man where finally the arts and music all came together.
I think being around so much art at Sotheby’s really inspired me to be more creative, and appreciate all arts. I guess this is how it translates into music.
At Sothebys, I was the one learning to build artists’ profiles, and it taught me how much works goes into building artists.
Electronic Groove: And now you’ve got your ‘Nalu’ EP coming out on Anathema. What’s the concept behind this one?
Marymoon: “Nalu” means wave in Hawaiian, and as I mentioned before I had just moved to a little town by the ocean, which has been one of the biggest changes in my life. I started a family, changed countries, and started learning a new language, so I tried to capture all of these emotions into this EP.

Electronic Groove: What can we expect soundwise? How is ‘Nalu’ different from your past releases?
Marymoon: ‘Nalu’ is more energetic, and I explored taking the tempo cup to 125bpm and focusing on tracks I can actually play in the peak hours of my sets.
Sound-wise I always try to stay true to the elements I like using, which I hope to create a journey charged with a lot of emotions, and the story behind each track.
Electronic Groove: We know there’s a very special track in this one. Who is Okean? How was the whole process of translating this beautiful connection into this piece?
Marymoon: Okean (океан) means Ocean in Russian, which is my son’s name. I was making this one while I was still pregnant with him, and I picked this one exploring the emotions of what I imagined at the time I would feel like when he was born. However, nothing prepares you for the reality of what you feel when your first baby is actually born.
Electronic Groove: Was it hard finding the inspiration to write music under the current global circumstances? Have your creative/inspirational activities been affected? Did you have to start doing things differently or something like that?
Marymoon: I actually haven’t been writing music during the pandemic. When everything started shutting down we were very nervous not knowing what was happening, and then when the world finally got locked down we used this time to focus on being present at home, and dedicated a lot of time to ourselves, and pay full attention to our son. I have to say the pandemic has given me a very positive, and personal outlook on my life.
Electronic Groove: What is your relationship with Anathema like? Why did you choose to release ‘Nalu’ with them?
Marymoon: I met the Anathema boys when I went to play at Hardpop which was an incredible show. We got talking afterward, and I did a podcast for them. As they say, the rest is history. I am very happy to be releasing my new EP with them as I now feel very connected to all things Mexico.

Electronic Groove: What’s in store for Marymoon for the rest of 2021? What can we look forward to?
Marymoon: I am finally getting my O1 visa, so hopefully I can play the US as much as possible in 2021. Which is one of my favorite markets, and very close to home now. I am really looking forward to that. I also have a few podcasts coming out which I am very excited about.
