Kurt Heisz: “Behind the music, there is always a story to be heard”

Kurt Heisz has a very intimate way of connecting with his crowd and he is capable of teleporting listeners somewhere else. The Andorran artist has been perfecting and creating his own sounds since the start of 2018. During all of this time, Kurt has been creating his proper atmosphere, where he presents very emotional melodies together with an explosion of raw force.

With the release of ‘My Heart Is Acid’ EP on Frequenza, we catch up with Kurt Heisz to talk about the new musical package, his upbringing, views on music, travels, and more.

Electronic Groove: Hi Kurt! Welcome to EG. It’s a pleasure to have you with us for a chat. How have you been doing? Where are you right now?

Kurt Heisz: Hello! Thank you very much for the opportunity of having this interview with you guys! I am currently in my hometown, Andorra. Today I am thankful that the world is reopening so that I can travel again and enjoy music all over the world.

Electronic Groove: You got into electronic music at a young age, is that right? How did you get started?

Kurt Heisz: Yes! From the age of 15/16 I already had a controller at home. Later, I acquired my grandmother’s vinyl collection, where I began to appreciate another type of sound for my ears. At the age of 18, I started as a resident DJ at GrandValira & Abarset, where I started with my first professional shows.

Electronic Groove: And what about production? Was there a record or track that made you want to learn how to write your own songs?

Kurt Heisz: With the production, it was a bit different as I became passionate a little later, and I spent 3/4 years focusing on getting something unique and personal. I directly decided to create my music, because I thought … ‘People dance when I play music of other artists, why wouldn’t they dance to my own music?’

Electronic Groove: How would you define your sound by now? What is the best setting for the music you make?

Kurt Heisz: Currently I am creating a techno sound connected to cosmic sounds and above all, melodic. I always think that not everything has to be dark, that there are always bits of light. That, for me, are the melodies. Without thinking it, my music sound is for underground clubs and macro parties.

“People dance when I play music of other artists, why wouldn’t they dance to my own music?”

Electronic Groove: Speaking about music, you’ve got your ‘My Heart Is Acid’ EP out now on Frequenza. Congratulations! What’s the inspiration behind this one? What can listeners expect, sonic-wise?

Kurt Heisz: I focused on creating a line of 3 tracks, where, between them, I create a story from beginning to end. I also made my debut in the acid sound, since I have always danced to it and connected a lot with that essence, so I applied it to the album!, but without leaving behind the journey that the Album provides you.

I think listeners can expect to hear different kinds of sounds. I worked on the drops in a personal way, and the melodies are very catchy!

Electronic Groove: Let’s dive into your studio. What gear or soft are you using right now? Have you picked up any new instruments or plug-ins lately that you’d recommend?

Kurt Heisz: Sounds good! Let’s go there! In my studio I currently have:

  • Focusrite Audio Card – 18i6
  • Monitors / Adam Audio – F7
  • Keyboard / Arturia – 49 Key Lab
  • APC 40 MK1
  • APC 40 MK2
  • Maschine MK2
  • Synthesizer / Roland System 1.

I bought the APC 40 MK2 a few months ago, and the truth is that I would recommend it 100% for both production and the live scene.

Electronic Groove: What concepts or notions inspire your music? Are there stories behind the music as well? Or do you think about them strictly as musical pieces?

Kurt Heisz: Like most of us when we were little, we had our problems. And for me, it was like a therapeutic outlet until I was able to carry out my studio and find myself capable of entering and controlling each of my feelings and emotions, where I translate them into my studio. Behind the music, there is always a story to be heard. Without music, life would have no meaning. For me, music makes you feel alive and makes others feel alive.

Electronic Groove: You have traveled quite a lot with your music. What has been the best clubbing/raving experience you have seen/been a part of?

Kurt Heisz: The truth is that I was able to travel at a young age and I had a great time on all the trips where I played! Every night is special, different, and unique. I could not choose, each place had something special.

“Without music, life would have no meaning. For me, music makes you feel alive and makes others feel alive”

Electronic Groove: What’s next for Kurt Heisz? What new milestones are you looking forward to in the coming months?

Kurt Heisz: I am working harder than ever in my studio. I am 100% immersed and connecting with it to create what will be two future EPs and an album that will contain 12 tracks.

Electronic Groove: Thank you for your time Kurt! We wish you all the best for the future!

Kurt Heisz: Thank you very much guys! Stay Safe!
