With a fresh remix for Matias Burna’s ‘Tatum’ on Electronic Groove Records, EG caught up with Kostya Outta to learn more about the drop, his views on the progressive scene, future endeavors, and more.

EG: Hi Kostya! Welcome to EG. It’s a pleasure to have you here with us. How have you been? Where are you based right now?

Kostya Outta: Hi guys, thank you so much! I’m doing well, I just got back from my trip to Budapest. Wanted to see that beautiful city for a long time and finally it was happening. Now I’m based in Warsaw, Poland.

EG: First of all, congratulations on your new remix for Matias Burna’s ‘Tatum’ on Electronic Groove Records! What has the initial reception been like? Have you been able to test this one live?

Kostya Outta: Thank you! The initial reception has been really positive! I’ve received a lot of great feedback on it, and I’ve had the opportunity to play it many times. The best part is that each time was a different party with a different audience, but every time, the crowd reaction was fantastic! It seems like people really enjoy it.

EG: So, you’re quite in demand these days…what was it about Matias Burna’s ‘Tatum’ that caught your attention and made you want to get involved as a remixer? What was the process like?

Kostya Outta: Oh, that was like.. “what a nice track I’m listening to. I would like to play it in my sets! But wait, they asked about the remix on it? I will definitely do it!”. So I really enjoyed the groove parts and melodies there, and it was an interesting experiment for me to work with them, as I always try to showcase the elements I like in a unique way. And since the original was already very close to the sound I produce, I tried to move with it to another genre. So that’s how my first Melodic House & Techno remix was born.

EG: How do you generally go about in the studio? Is there a certain “blueprint” you follow? How do you decide when a track is finished?

Kostya Outta: Usually I begin with the groove parts, trying to find a good combination. However, some days I wake up with a nice melody already in my head. From there, I start building a loop around it in my DAW. And when the loop is complete, I move on to the arrangement. But in order to decide that it is finished, I focus on my inner feeling, the track should be listened to as if in one breath. And if so, then it’s ready.

“Since the original was already very close to the sound I produce, I tried to move with it to another genre. So that’s how my first Melodic House & Techno remix was born.”

EG: On another note, you work as CMO / Artists Relations at BeDJ, which is a very interesting project. Can you tell us more about BeDJ and what your job entails?

Kostya Outta: The main idea behind BeDJ is to learn DJing, in the same way people learn to play the piano – by using special sheet notes created with our unique software. Currently, my main focus is on attracting new artists from around the world to the project to collaborate with them in creating these sheet notes. This allows our users to play DJ sets in the same way as their favorite artists do.

EG: And how extensive is it in terms of its program? Is it just for beginners?

Kostya Outta: Since the project is based on a completely different principle, unlike what other DJ schools offer, we don’t have any “program” in the accepted sense of the word. On BeDJ pros give a kind of “homework” assignments to users. So you can choose your favorite genre or artist who you’d like to be your DJ instructor, purchase the homework and play the mix follow the step-by-step instruction to learn how to DJ at the same time.

EG: You’ve been a part of the progressive scene for quite a while now. In your perception, how has it changed since you first started out? Where do you think it will go in the next few years?

Kostya Outta: To be honest, I have the impression that the progressive scene hasn’t changed significantly over the years. However, we still see new names rising up every year who refresh the sound of the genre with their new ideas. Hope in the next few years we’ll get more such names and will see more hi ends on the scene.

EG: How do you keep entertained when not in the studio? Have you checked out any good movies, series, books, or albums you’d recommend?

Kostya Outta: Since I spend most of my time, you might say, in virtual reality, I try to balance it out with activities in the real world. Here, I mean sports activities, socializing with friends, traveling, and even walking around the city on new routes.

Regarding the movies I really enjoyed both parts of ‘Avatar’, among the albums I’d like to recommend the timeless ‘Exploring The Tributaries’ (2007) by Vibrasphere. I’ve also recently started reading ‘The Power of Now’ by Eckhart Tolle, which seems very interesting to me.

“I’ve been dreaming for the past few years of going on a tour in Latin America, especially in Argentina because I feel a soul connection with the people there.”

EG: What’s next for Kostya Outta? What particular milestones are you looking forwards to this 2023? Where can your fans catch you next?

Kostya Outta: This year, I already have planned releases on Dmitry Molosh’s label Proportion, on Warpp, and I’m also going back to Afterglow Records with something really special. Besides that, I started some big collaborations, so I hope soon I will have something to surprise my audience with.

Regarding the gigs, I’ve been dreaming for the past few years of going on a tour in Latin America, especially in Argentina, because I feel a soul connection with the people there. This is also confirmed by statistics, as the majority of my audience is from that region. So, I’m really hoping it will happen soon.

EG: Thank you so much for your time, Kostya! We wish you all the best for the future.

Kostya Outta: Thanks a lot guys! Wishing you the same as well!
