Bross: “This is my rebirth as an artist”

Bross continues to establish a new house-focussed direction for his sound with the release of his new two-track EP Renaissance.

Last month, Bross released the patient and deeply atmospheric ‘No More Games’ – a Bandcamp exclusive that saw him move further towards the house sound that will characterize his music in 2023 and beyond. December now sees the first full release of this new era, the two-track ‘Renaissance’, landing on his own Trubadour Records.

EG caught up with Bross to learn more about the release of ‘Renaissance’, his newly launched Trubadour Records, the Romanian scene, and more.

EG: Hi Bross! Welcome to EG. It’s a pleasure to have you here with us. Where are you based right now?

Bross: Hi guys! It’s a pleasure to be a part of this. I’m based in Bucharest, Romania, the place where I found my home and where I’m surrounded by many friends.

EG: So, what was your summer like? Any particular highlights?

Bross: This summer I have been traveling a lot, and playing music. As a highlight, I’ve got to say that I loved the week spent in Ibiza. The island has lots of beautiful places and beaches that make you think why you are not living there. I had the chance to play at the new Akasha in front of a full club.

EG: By the way, congratulations on the release of your latest EP, ‘Renaissance’! What has the reception been like?

Bross: Thanks for that. It is the first release of my label, Trubadour Records, and I have worked for a few months to define the sound. The feedback is great, many DJs have already played both tracks, and the crowd reaction is positive. Of course, I am happy that I am getting this support from my DJ friends and from my followers, as it gives me the confidence to continue on this path.

EG: What can your fans expect to find on ‘Renaissance’? Is there a concept inspiring this one?

Bross: I think about it as my rebirth as an artist, making my way into a different music scene. My listeners can expect to hear a new sound direction, which is not as dreamy as it used to be, but more house-y and similar to the club scene music.

“I want to experiment with my new sound; to create my own marketing strategies, visuals, and to take it from the studio to the clubs via brand parties”

EG: And, as you mentioned, ‘Renaissance’ is out via your own Trubadour Records. What can we expect from your label?

Bross: The plan is to release all my productions on my label, at least for now. I want to experiment with my new sound; to create my own marketing strategies, visuals, and to take it from the studio to the clubs via brand parties. The first party was on December 17th inside an interbelic palace in Bucharest, Casa Monteoru.

EG: Your last few singles have signaled a shift in your sound, right? How would you define your sound now, when compared to a few years ago? What motivated this evolution?

Bross: I would like to think that I am more mature in sound and production and that everything I used to do was meant to help me become who I am. I still love listening to my old music, but it has become very hard to play them.

Motivation will always come from the crowd. I love seeing them go wild on my music, it’s the best feeling.

EG: Do you think these sonic changes might alienate some of your older fans? Does one take that into account when moving forwards?

Bross: It has been taken into consideration as this change is being done slowly. It started almost two years ago, when you could already hear me playing more groovy sets at parties or in my podcasts.

Of course, there are people that might not find the new sound to their liking, as I come from a more dreamy and melodic stage. However, the one that I have approached now has its own crowd and it’s bigger than I expected. Hopefully, both my current fans and the new listeners will understand that this change means a lot to me and that I will always need and appreciate all their support.

EG: What are your thoughts on the current state of the scene? What would you like to see more and less of?

Bross: There will always be a place for more or better. I think that you own your place in the scene by going out often, networking, and knowing people. It’s important to get out of the studio more often.

I would like to see more interest in the new DJs at festivals and parties, maybe some artist management as right now we miss this a lot, at least here in Bucharest.

EG: What is art and why do we need it?

Bross: For me, music is the most present way of art in my life and I can say I would be lost without it. It’s a way of living and a way to express myself.

EG: What’s next for Bross? What particular milestones are you looking forward to now? Where can your fans catch you next?

Bross: December comes with a few gigs in Bucharest, my Trubadour Records launch party is on the 17th, and I am putting a lot of work into this one. I have all my friends playing with me and this gives me a boost of energy and confidence.

Looking forward to seeing you all at this one or at the ones that will follow!

EG: Thank you so much for your time, Bross! We wish you all the best for the future.

Bross: Thanks for having me and for the things you guys do for the industry, it’s really appreciated. Peace and Love!
