Michel Baumann (Soulphiction / Jackmate) has passed away from cancer.
German artist and label owner Michel Baumann has died on May 24th after losing a tough battle with cancer. Last month, he had announced that he was undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
Best known as Soulphiction and Jackmate, Baumann was born in Stuttgart, where he acquired a taste for funk, jazz, and hip-hop, before discovering house music. Becoming a true craftsman, Baumann donned his Soulphiction and Jackmate monikers with flair and finesse, releasing countless deep house and minimal singles and records on cornerstone labels like Pampa, Sonar Kollektiv, Playhouse, Poker Flat, and his own Philpot imprint (inspired by Larry Levan’s real surname), which he ran alongside Tobias Ettle.
