When you get to see Disclosure play a gig, you just know you are in for a show and a half, one not only filled with their unique musical sounds but also a technical display of professional visuals and graphics that will entice your eyes, giving them an animated experience of their own. The UK family duo showcased three fully sold-out events exclusive to London, where they were supported by none other than one of the hottest DJ acts right now, TSHA. We caught their show at the 02 Academy Brixton, and here is how it went down.
Known as the providers of new and true UK vibes and sounds, The Lawrence Brothers, otherwise known as Disclosure have come a long way over the last decade selling out parties, events, and festivals all over the world. But having the opportunity to see them play on their home turf in the UK and, more specifically, inside huge venues in London, will undoubtedly give you a unique perspective into their style and how it is translated on a British dance floor. Their tunes are indeed very catchy and well known but what makes them interesting is their cross-genre style that includes elements of Chicago house, Detroit techno, UK garage, dubstep, house, pop, and more. What’s also a big part of the vibe at their shows is how they build up an atmosphere of intimacy and inclusivity with the audience where most of their fans know all the lyrics to their songs and sing along throughout the whole set, swaying their hands in the air.
As one of the most professional “big room” venues in the city, the 02 Academy Brixton was the perfect place to catch this scale of an event. TSHA, who took over the stage at the start and warmed up the crowd with some bouncy and groovy house tunes, certainly did not mess around. The crowd was truly shacking out to her set, where they also enjoyed seeing her jump around with attitude behind the decks to a tune selection of raw and energetic basslines that took over our ears from the minute she hit play. As one of the most exciting young artists in the UK at the moment, seeing TSHA in her element provided enjoyment for all. Her tunes set a vibrant tone for this opening set that successfully got the crowd moving on the dancefloor with no resistance.
Following TSHA’s lively performance came the main act, Disclosure, who played a 1.5-hour set filled with a curated selection, mixing some of their newer and older songs that went down an absolute treat in this very London-style crowd. Kicking it all off with no other than ‘White Noise’ and relentlessly working through a hard-hitting selection of true crowd-pleasing classics, some of the best moments were when they dropped ‘Tonda’, ‘Douha’, ‘Holding On’, ‘Lavender’, and of course ‘Latch’ which made the crowd go absolutely wild. Watching the duo do their thing, especially at the 02 Academy, was a touching moment for both them and for us in the audience, creating an atmosphere of euphoria and nostalgia that was specific to this London environment. Their tunes and the way they interacted with the crowd were fully on point, but also the visuals on display pushed the overall experience to a next level. Another massive moment during their set was when they dropped their newest song – ‘You’ve Got To Let Go If You Want To Be Free’, a groovy and soulful tune released in collaboration with German electro-house producer, Zedd.
As one of the most iconic British electronic music duos known globally, seeing Disclosure do what they do best, especially in London, was an all-around fantastic night filled with euphoric, joyful, and intimate vibes. The brothers will be touring the US and various other regions this year, but you can catch them back in in the capital city, headlining at the All Points East festival in Victoria Park on Saturday, August 27th.
