Marie Nyx debuts Elysium EP on her co-owned Delusional Records imprint
The three-track techno EP debuts on Nyx’s co-founded label, which she and her partner launched earlier this year to promote experimentation, visibility, and inclusivity Delusions exist outside the confines of what some consider “normal” thought; to be delusional is to channel these mysterious ideas into the physical plane of existence; to give understanding to something not meant to be understood.
LA-based techno producer Marie Nyx and her partner Maude Vôs launched Delusional Records earlier this year as a hub for all delusional individuals to thrive together, driven by the core values of experimentation, visibility and inclusivity. Delusional Records is working to revive the roots of dance music culture; when there were no rules, just honest expression.
That honest expression rings true throughout Marie Nyx’s debut EP Elysium, which drops today via her co-owned imprint. Across three transcendental techno cuts, Marie Nyx demonstrates her fluidity as an artist and her balance between darkness and light in search of elysium, defined as a place or condition of ideal happiness and bliss.
Elysium represents the steps Marie Nyx has taken in her own life to reach her state of elysium — EP opener “Occult Reveries” offers a propulsive techno peek inside Marie Nyx’s daydreams of finding her inner power to manifest her desires while the melody-driven “Out of the Shadows” acknowledges the strength of performing shadow work to reach her highest sense of self. To end the story of Elysium, Marie Nyx closes the EP with the minimal “Up for Air,” where she comes to terms with the reality of what it takes to reach a state of elysium: it’s a reminder to come up for air throughout the process.
Elysium suitably switches between styles and tones, an intentional artistic choice that mimics Marie Nyx’s DJ sets. Nyx, who has performed for radio stations including Platinum Radio London and Ibiza Global Radio, wants to create that link between the headphones and the club. After nearly two years of dance floor-deprivation, Marie Nyx now wants to recapture that elusive warehouse spirit. As a result, she energizes her listeners to get out there again, turning that delusion into a reality.
Marie Nyx’s leading inspiration for this release was partner and co-owner of Delusional Records, Maude Vôs. “She pushed me daily to put forth my best effort into my projects and was always willing to teach and give me advice,” Nyx says. “This showed that she believed in my work and it continued to inspire me to not give up on it like I would have in the past, Which is even more motivating because she is a musician I truly look up to.” Together, the two have built their notoriety throughout the Los Angeles underground scene and continue to do so through their inclusive, boundary-pushing new label.
ABOUT MARIE NYX
As one of the premier DJs in Los Angeles, Marie Nyx has an unmatched ability to adapt to the wants and needs of any dance floor without sacrificing her infectious, apparitional style. Pre-quarantine Marie was mesmerizing hearts and minds at notable bookings such as the Mixmag Lab LA, Clinic Wednesdays, Minimal Effort, and a few of LA’s longest running undergrounds.
Over quarantine Marie proliferated her esoteric sonic identity to an even larger audience, enchanting the airwaves of Twitch through mainstay channels like Abracadabra, Sian’s Octopus Recordings, and Desert Hearts TV where she played for upwards of 15,000 viewers at a time and hosted her dastardly and mystifying affair, Nyx @ Nite on several occasions.
Now the world is returning from the darkness, and Marie’s drive to contribute and create continues to germinate as she co-helms her own hypnotic imprint, Delusional Records, with fellow experimental producer and DJ, Maude Vôs.
It is here Marie released her long-awaited debut EP, Elysium which denotes her prowess in demonstrating her sound through feeling rather than fact. Each of the three tracks amalgamates and dissipates through different genres, maintaining their bonds through dreamy pads, minimal drums yet driving beats, ominous melodies, hints of acid, and crisp claps.
The constant is change. The ability is in the adaptation.
