Miguel Hernández, also known as OXXID, is a Mexican DJ and producer from Chihuahua. He is known for his disco house style, his perseverance, and for his collaborations with various artists such as Riolo, KoKo, and Artdob. He has released his music on labels such as Panda Funk, Vox Records, Loko Sound, and + Más label, and has the support of Broz Rodríguez, XDM Records Riallo, and Koko Music.
We caught with OXXID to talk about his latest musical projects.
Electronic Groove: Hello, OXXID, thank you for your time today with us. What were your first interactions with music like? At what moment did you decide you wanted to produce your own records?
OXXID: Hello and thank you for having me. My first interactions with music were when I had 17 years old and decided to become a DJ in my hometown in México. It was a bit hard because nobody wanted to help or to teach an unknown guy but I end up learning by myself and turned out really well. Then I started to produce my own music at age 22.
Electronic Groove: We know you hosted a DJ course recently. How did that come about? What was the experience like? Was this your first time doing something like that?
OXXID: Yes! I get to teach 8 students from my own city. It was really fun and exciting because I got so impressed with how they wanted to learn from me, it was my first time and I really hope I get to do it again soon!
Electronic Groove: Digging straight into the studio… We know you’ve got a brand new release coming up, ‘Time To Shine’. What’s the story behind it?
OXXID: Yes, ‘Time To Shine’ is my upcoming track, and the story behind is that I wanted to do something with disco and video games, so I played around with some of both elements and that’s how I came up with the idea.
Electronic Groove: Where have you been finding inspiration during these hard times? Was it harder to write new music during the pandemic?
OXXID: Well, it has been really hard to find inspiration because I used to get it from people on shows, or from flying to another city but now I get inspiration from people on social media, like followers, or from some of my friends, but also I think that thanks to this pandemic I had the time to improve my productions.

Electronic Groove: What gear did you use on ‘Time To Shine’? What’s your favorite bit of gear right now?
OXXID: I have been using Fl studio for all of my productions. It has been my favorite gear since I started to produce my music.
Electronic Groove: How are you holding up with the whole quarantine situation? Do you envisage some personal changes going forward?
OXXID: Well, quarantine has been really hard and not just for me. I bet it has been hard for all the music industry but speaking for myself, I try to stay focused on my productions and spending time with my family. In the future I’m going to try to become more mature on my music project, taking more serious decisions.
Electronic Groove: What it takes to be a good DJ?
OXXID: I’ve always believed that teamwork is the key to become a successful DJ/producer and I have the luck to have Broz Rodríguez and XDM Records support along with my disco house releases, as well as the help from Riallo and Koko Music on music production, if any DJ thinks that he or she can make it on their own. Well maybe 1 out of 100 can do it but, I really think that teamwork is the key to make it.
Electronic Groove: What can your fans expect for next year?
OXXID: I’m so excited for next year because I’m releasing a disco album with XDM Records with some original vocals on it from some great artists, the name is going to be ‘Better Days’, named like that after the main track ‘Better Days’ that I did along with Emma May singer, so hope everybody is ready for it!
