5 tips for selecting remixers by Lastlings

GRAMMY-nominated Australian trio RÜFÜS DU SOL released a stunning remix of the track ‘No Time’ from electronic sibling act Lastlings. With a shared history dating back to 2018, the band discovered the emerging duo early on in their careers and signed them to their tastemaking label Rose Avenue. Since then, RÜFÜS DU SOL has played an integral role in helping to develop and mentor them as musicians and touring artists, inviting them on their SOLACE World Tour in 2019, and now providing a poignant rework of their single ‘No Time’.

To celebrate the remix Lastling share some of the recommendations they apply to select their remixers.

1. Pick someone who has supported your music and understands your sound

Producers who are friends or even strangers that have been following your music closely for a few years are great picks. Chances are they know what the strong elements are from your music (whether it be the vocals or synth leads) and can take those elements and really hero them in their own remixes. Personally I think it’s important if a listener can link the remix back to the original by a certain vocal hook or musical element so it’s familiar to them.

2. Someone you respect and want to play in your set

There’s no better feeling than getting the approval on a track by an artist you respect and they then say yes to a remix. That feeling amplifies when the remix is finished and you can play it in your own set. The RÜFÜS DU SOL remix of ‘No Time’ is a great example of this. We have nothing but respect for the band so having them remix this track was something special. Really hope things start to get better so we can play it in a club!

3. Select someone from another style or genre

Hearing what an artist can do to your song with a different style of production is really interesting. Seeing how they used the same elements you used to make the song in a completely different way is a pretty good learning tool as well in changing things up when you’re writing your own music. Although it’s still ‘electronic’ music, the Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs remix of ‘Take My Hand’ gave it a bit of UK style vibe which we love from him.

4. Pick an up and coming producer

There are so many talented producers out there that when given the chance, would jump at the opportunity to remix your track and kill it. It’s tough breaking through as an artist so giving someone that you believe in a shot to share their sound with a new audience is incredibly helpful. One of our favorite remixes of our songs is the Luke Alessi remix of ‘Deja Vu’.

5. Someone who can take your music to a new audience

Think of where you want your music to be heard. Pick producers and DJs playing clubs, festivals, and parties that you want to hear remixes of your music played at. Torren Foot played at a lot of clubs and parties that we would go to so he was a great pick to broaden our audience and hear our music played in local clubs where we are from. This tip might be subject to change though because of the pandemic.
