For some time now the combined forces of Mark Caramelli & Paul Hargreaves have been causing quite a stir under their guise, Death on the Balcony. The duo’s style fuses a range of influences from disco through to house & deep techno depending on the time, space and environment. Years of dedicated musical passion and an appreciation of numerous genres have lead to their sound receiving popularity across the board.
As one of the UK’s more versatile acts, Death on the Balcony will be delivering more productions, remixes and playing gigs worldwide as part of the All Day I Dream family and beyond. As their range of musicality continues to evolve they consistently deliver a unique, well-timed narrative of the best sounds around.
We had the chance to talk with Emilie McGlone (Parties4Peace Founder) and Death on the Balcony ahead of their Chile tour. For more info click here.
Electronic Groove: Hello Emilie, Paul & Mark. You are to embark on a tour around Chile. What are your expectations?
Emilie McGlone: This is year 12 for the Patagonia tour in South America! As a special tribute to Chile, this year’s tour is called the 2020 Patagonica Vision Tour, in honor of the citizens of this country who are standing up for civil rights and social justice. The political unrest this year has led to a massive movement by the people who believe in a better world and we are working together with our local partners to raise awareness and support a vision for a more sustainable future. We will be hosting parties in 7 cities throughout Chile and visiting the pristine nature in Patagonia, one of the most beautiful places on earth with glaciers, mountains and rivers, that we hope will inspire the artists to join us in climate action.
EG: Who are the guest artists joining this year’s tour?
Emilie McGlone: We are very excited to welcome the duo Death on the Balcony from All Day I Dream to join us for this year’s tour in Patagonia. I absolutely love their music and I am so excited to introduce them to the Chilean music scene. All of our partners there are looking forward to traveling together and welcoming them to the Patagonica collective of artists. The tour really is a unique experience, and in each city, we have many friends working to create an environment where people can enjoy the music and share in our vision for a sustainable future.
EG: For Death on the Balcony, this will be your first time to collaborate with Parties4Peace in New York, South America and Miami – for this special tour, what excites you about being part of this community of artists, giving back and helping make the world a better place through music and art?
Death on the Balcony: Yes, it will be our debut for Parties4Peace. Since becoming friends, meeting Emilie in New York and learning about the amazing work she has been doing all over the world it was a matter of time before we got involved. Hearing about what she has brought to communities all around the world through art and music is inspiring and we are happy to be playing our part in it. Hopefully the first of many projects together!
EG: Chile is well known for its musical talent. What are you looking forward to share through your music in Chile?
Death on the Balcony: Music is all about bringing people together and connecting on a personal level beyond normal communication. The energy and message we share through our music has resonated from all over and the comments we hear from people who have really connected makes our endeavors validated and worthwhile. It helps to inspire us to continue and do more. It truly is the best feeling to bring your sound to others and have them understand, connect and feel what you are trying to convey. We hope to bring some smiles to people’s faces, bring questions and even some answers to their minds, pull on some heartstrings, and if nothing else to create positive experiences and memories!
EG: How would you describe your sound as Death on the Balcony? Tell us about the All Day I Dream label and partners.
Death on the Balcony: We have the phrase “Melodic buzz of a hazy brain”, that’s been in our biography for a while now and this ticks a lot of boxes to describe our sound. Describing the sound can feel like a thankless task at times so we would encourage you to have a listen instead 😉 ‘warm, deep, trippy, emotive with a groove for the dance floor’
As a label over the years, Lee (Burridge) has organically made a wonderful, sincere community & platform worldwide for many dreamers, dancers & music lovers. We’re proud & humbled to be part of the family of artists representing through what we play, produce, feel and create. Equally as important as the music is the positive, real impression we also try to leave behind as people wherever the beat takes us and where we connect… Simply All Day I Dream is love!
EG: The Parties4Peace tour in Chile supports the Campaign to Declare Patagonia a World Heritage site recognized by UNESCO and raise awareness for sustainability. Why do you think this is important? How do you think artists can contribute to climate action?
Death on the Balcony: Protecting nature and our planet should be a number one priority for governments around the world. Some seem to neglect the fact that we as humans are minuscule in comparison to the earth, planet, universe and so on… We have been given a miracle of an earth that has the perfect conditions to harbor life and to watch that be destroyed by us is heartbreaking. Such nature and beauty like Patagonia is one example of somewhere that should be protected. For all the bad there is good in the world, so it’s a belief that this will prevail and that people will see how important protecting our planet is.
Artists can raise awareness through music and can make changes in their own lives to cut down on their carbon emissions. In a job where you fly a lot, it can be tough and almost seem hypocritical to talk about such things but small changes in all our lives would make huge differences. Things such as eating less meat, walking/riding bikes more locally instead of cars, recycling if done on a mass scale can be a step in the right direction. Thinking and being mindful of these things & others is a small step rather than just carelessly plodding along toward oblivion.

EG: Have you played in South America before? What are you looking forward to most about this trip?
Death on the Balcony: We have, yes. We have been to Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia & Argentina over the years. The people we have met there have been so friendly and culture in South America is wonderful. It’s a whole amazing world in its self the varied regions. We are excited to see Patagonia and we feel privileged to be visiting such amazing places along the way. La Montaña Festival – festival in the mountains! What more can you say, it looks mind-blowing! We are also looking forward to seeing the friends we haven’t made yet, which is such a big part of what we do and what makes every tour we go on special and unique…
The people we’ve met, so far have shown such passion for the music in South America so we are looking forward to seeing how Chile compares.
EG: Due to the recent socio-political issues that Chile is facing, how do you think culture and music can help to influence a positive change?
Death on the Balcony: With such a turbulent history of dictatorships and corruption, Chile has been through so much. Obviously most recently with the unrest and distrust in the political class, the people need and deserve happiness. Music can bring escapism and a release from all of this and something to enjoy and feel positively passionate about. We hope to see a move towards more equality and less disparity. No matter where it is, people deserve a fair government and to be treated like humans and we hope brighter futures lie ahead for this country.
EG: Tell us about your new mix for Parties4Peace. What’s coming up next for you while on tour?
Death on the Balcony: We have put together a selections of music we have been feeling and playing recently. Some new stuff and some older gems from the archives as we do. We have also been busy in the studio working on new music/remixes recently which will be released in the coming months on labels such as All Day I Dream and Kindisch.
We’ve also been focusing on sourcing new original music from producers we respect as well for our new label that will be launching later this year.
