Demenz: “I love to watch people enjoying the music that I’m playing”

Hailing from Venezuela and currently living in Miami, Demenz is a DJ and producer that has been involved with electronic music during the last 10 years. Playing different times at one of the most important parties in the country, Partaí, now he prepares to explore new regions and countries.

We caught up with Demenz to talk about his move to Miami, recent tour and future plans.

Electronic Groove: Hi Demenz, thanks for your time today. How was your summer? Anything special worth sharing with us?

Demenz: Hey guys, thank you for this interview. The summer was great, I did a tour visiting Panama, Los Angeles, Tulum and others cities promoting my new alias ‘Demenz’. Also tested my latest tracks on these gigs. I enjoyed every city as I love to play in new locations, discovering different music scenes and people. It was very productive definitely.

EG: How did you get involved with electronic music? Where were your beginnings?

Demenz: My beginnings were at my native city, Valencia, Venezuela. Around 2009 we used to listen to acid techno and hardtechno with big influence from artists like Dave the Drummer, The Liberator Brothers, Geezer and many quality local Djs. Then I created a party series called ‘TECHNOFLIGHTS’ where I brought all these artists that I followed to my city, also inviting respected local ones. It was a lovely start, I always remember those days.

EG: You currently reside in Miami. What has been the biggest challenge moving to this city?

Demenz: Yes, I moved to Miami recently, I would say starting from scratch again in a new country where you don’t know too many people, it takes time to get deep in Miami’s music scene, but it is exciting at the same time. I’m happy to be here where every weekend we have top underground artists coming with different music approaches that I like, watching them perform and learning, as well as getting involved with interesting people that I meet on a daily basis.

EG: The underground scene in Miami is growing rapidly, what do you like the most about it and what are some of your favorite places?

Demenz: What I like most about the city is the variety that the Miami scene host every weekend, you have several events with music for every genre. At the moment I love going to Treehouse or to the Electric Pickle where I can enjoy the music that I’m into, I’m also a fan of discovering new venues or secret warehouses 🙂

EG: We know you’ve been working with a record label since you moved to the US, can you tell us a little bit more about it and how that experience has helped you with your DJ career?

Demenz: Yes, I’m working with Underfull in Miami. It’s my first time working with a record label and it has been great, I love it. I’m learning a lot working with new artists, doing things that I haven’t done before and it is helping me to grow in different areas of the music industry.

EG: What do you enjoy more, Djing or producing?

Demenz: Tough question, I love both but I would go with Djing. I love to watch people enjoying the music that I’m playing.

EG: What would you say is the best and worst of being an artist?

Demenz: The best definitely is to play music in different places, travel, meet new people and artists, Djs that have inspired you, and the worst being far from the people I love when I’m traveling.

EG: What artists and labels have inspired you lately?

Demenz: My favorite labels at the moment are Yoyaku, I love their whole concept; truelovesounds, it’s a new label with only 4 releases but I liked them all; Fuse London I think they have done a great job as a team.
Regarding artists, some of my inspirations are Seb Zito, Zendid, The Willers Brothers and East N Dubs.

EG: Could you share a couple of your favorite tracks that you are playing at the moment?

Demenz: Sure, Casey Spillman – ‘Time to Bloom’ and ADEN – ‘Viceversa’.

EG: What is your favorite thing to do outside of music?

Demenz: I like doing different things, discover new places that I didn’t’ know, go to the beach, practicing sports, meet with my friends and change my routine.

EG: What’s next? What’s in the pipeline for the near to mid future?

Demenz: Working a lot on my new productions, after finishing my tour I’m going to be focused in the studio for the rest of the year. Also, we’ll have showcases to promote the record label around different cities of the United States.
