Mystery man Banksy has painted two new murals inspired by Jean-Michel Basquiat, and located in the walls of the Barbican in London.
The artist better known as Basquiat was a North American paint virtuoso discovered by Andy Warhol that had his glory days during the 70’s and 80’s, and described as “the pioneering prodigy of the 1980’s downtown New York art scene”.
Both Banksy pieces appeared a few days before the opening of the first Basquiat retrospective exhibition in the UK, and are “not official collaborations”.
The larger of the two pieces appears to be Banksy’s own take on Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Boy and Dog in a Johnnypump, created in 1982. The second artwork shows people queueing for a ferris wheel adorned with crowns – a common motif in Basquiat’s artwork – instead of passenger carts.
Jean-Michel Basquiat showcase will be taking place at the Barbican in London, starting September 21st, 2017. For more info click here.
