Underworld – Strawberry Hotel – Smith Hyde Productions

Underworld’s latest release, ‘Strawberry Hotel’, their 11th studio album, masterfully blends their iconic sound with fresh, innovative elements. The LP is divided into two distinct halves: the first is a high-energy, dance-driven journey filled with rolling basslines, sequenced arrangements, and the organic textures that have defined Underworld’s music since the ’90s. These tracks are perfectly crafted for the dance floor, exuding a techno and electronic energy that is unmistakably Underworld.

‘Strawberry Hotel’ opens with ‘Black Poppies’, a celestial-sounding track whose uplifting lyrics celebrate universal beauty, setting an optimistic, hopeful tone for the album. This is followed by a powerful half-hour of intense, energetic techno, with standout tracks like ‘Denver Luna’, ‘Techno Shinkansen’, and ‘And The Colour Red’, the latter of which was released as the album’s first single earlier last year.

A particularly moving moment on the album is the track ‘Ottavia’, a collaboration with Rick Smith’s daughter, Esme Bronwen-Smith, who delivers poignant, intense lyrics. Esme also co-produces the record, adding a unique, personal touch to the album.

The second half of ‘Strawberry Hotel’ shifts toward a more mellow and intimate sound, with downtempo and experimental tracks showcasing Underworld’s range and versatility. This progression creates a balanced, thoughtful listening experience that moves seamlessly from the dance floor to introspective, ambient spaces.
