Inspired by a summer I spent in Ibiza while writing for the Shapeshifters, “A Church in Ibiza” is a spiritual journey through the island’s duality—where hedonism and holiness fight a delicate duel. During my time there, I was blessed to be immersed in Ibiza’s rich and historic culture and natural beauty, far removed from the bustling tourist spots and nightclub scene. The locals shared with me the often-overlooked spiritual and historical depth of the island, which profoundly influenced this track. The juxtaposition of a serene church standing quietly amidst the island’s lively nightlife scene is a metaphor I couldn’t resist translating into music.
Musically, the track pays homage to the Balearic sounds that have shaped the island’s identity, with a modern twist. We drew inspiration from artists like Bonobo, DJ Seinfeld, and Weval, while also weaving in nostalgic synth elements inspired by Giorgio Moroder’s iconic “Chase.” The result is a piece that feels simultaneously fresh and timeless, perfect for a twilight hour in Ibiza.
We’ve been fortunate to receive over 10 million streams across platforms, and our debut album, “Reason or Rhyme,” won the 2018 Independent Music Award for Electronic Producers of the Year. Since then, our music has been featured on Café Mambo Ibiza Sunsets and Café del Mar compilations, and in global brand campaigns by the Gap, Zara, Tommy Hilfiger, H&M, and others. We’ve always strived to craft music that transports listeners to faraway shores, and we feel “A Church in Ibiza” is a prime example of that ethos.
