New regulations on the Balearic Islands aim to curb the drinking habits of tourists. The law, effective from May 11th, 2024 bans the sale of alcohol after 9:30 PM as a measure to control “excessive tourism” on popular party islands like Ibiza and Mallorca.

This law prohibits alcohol from 9:30 PM to 8:00 AM in key party areas on both islands, including Palma and Magaluf in Mallorca, and San Antonio in Ibiza. However, the ban does not apply to bars, restaurants, and clubs.

These rules are part of a larger effort to address unruly behavior and excessive drinking in tourist hotspots. Violators drinking outside of permitted areas could face fines of up to €1,500 (£1,290), as reported by the BBC. The number of penalties issued to tourists will be tallied and shared with the appropriate embassies. Local authorities also requested changes to the areas affected by the law.

The legislation limits boat parties from coming within one nautical mile of any affected area and bars them from picking up or dropping off passengers at these sites.

Building upon a decree from 2020 addressing “anti-social behaviour,” the updated restrictions are set to remain in effect until at least December 2027.
