EG had the opportunity to interview Mojave Grey, discussing their recent single, ‘House of the Sun’, as well as their newly released single ‘Edge of the Night’ and upcoming projects.
EG: Hi guys! Welcome to EG. It’s a pleasure to have you here with us. How have you been? Where are you right now?
Mojave Grey: We’ve been fantastic, riding the highs and lows of this creative journey. Currently, we’re soaking up the unique vibes of Joshua Tree – it’s our go-to sanctuary for introspection and inspiration.
EG: First of all, congratulations on the release of your recent single, ‘House of the Sun’! You must be very excited to share this one! What has the initial reception been like so far? Do you remember the first time you played this one live?
Mojave Grey: Thank you! ‘House of the Sun’ is a manifestation of our journey, fusing classic rock vibes with modern electronic elements. The initial reception has been beyond our expectations, confirming that our distinctive, genre-transcending sound resonates with listeners. This track, in many ways, exemplifies our endeavor to bridge soulful vocals with instrumental prowess, creating a sound that is as limitless as the desert landscape from which it emerged. We vividly remember its debut during our Aspen residency. The connection and energy exchange with the audience was a tangible, electrifying experience – it was pure magic.
EG: So, what’s ‘House of the Sun’ all about? What can your fans expect to find on this one?
Mojave Grey: ‘House of the Sun’ is a tribute to the desert’s timeless allure. Our fans can expect a unique blend of organic sounds meshed with polished synth-heavy beats, echoing the tranquil yet pulsating spirit of the vast landscape. It’s a sensory journey, marrying the old with the new.
EG: What can you tell fans about your just-released single, ‘Edge of the Night?
Mojave Grey: ‘Edge of the Night’ is our twilight counterpart to ‘House of the Sun’. It was birthed during our 2023 winter residency at Aspen’s The Snow Lodge, offering listeners a more profound connection through its moodier composition. The track captures that delicate moment when the sun lingers on the horizon before dusk consumes it – echoing the juxtaposition of release and resilience. Zander’s compelling vocals intertwine with the emotive percussive acoustics Pozzi crafts, guiding listeners on a journey, whether on the dancefloor or within their own introspection.
At its core, it’s about trusting oneself and the path ahead, never losing sight of the light, especially in challenging times. From its inception during intimate sessions at our makeshift studio in Aspen to its live debut, this track has resonated deeply, reminding everyone to take a chance on their wildest dreams.
“The connection and energy exchange with the audience was a tangible, electrifying experience – it was pure magic”
EG: You both have notably varied backgrounds in music. How did your paths cross? And was the concept for Mojave Grey always in the backdrop?
Mojave Grey: Our paths initially crossed within the intricate tapestry of the entertainment world. While our backgrounds and experiences are indeed varied, they brought distinct flavors and influences into our collaboration. But it was our shared vision for pioneering boundary-pushing music that made the formation of Mojave Grey not just possible, but inevitable.
EG: Social media seems to be playing a very prominent role in an artist’s development. But is it taking too much away from the actual music and making it more about numbers and the visual aspect?
Mojave Grey: Social media is a double-edged sword. While it enables connection and visibility, there’s a risk of overshadowing the art itself and taking away from creative output. Our aim has always been to strike a balance – to utilize platforms to complement and enhance our music, not define it.
EG: Have you come across any good books, movies, or records recently that you’d personally recommend? Where do you look for inspiration?
Mojave Grey: Certainly! Lately, we’ve been drawn to the sounds of Monolink, SOFI TUKKER, and Night Tales. Their melding of organic vibes with electronic elements feels akin to a journey, mirroring the vast terrains and rhythms of nature. Similarly, when you listen to our recent tracks like ‘House of the Sun’ and ‘Edge of the Night’, you might sense a reflection of the landscapes we’ve traversed and the myriad stories we’ve encountered along the way. It’s this rich tapestry of experiences and sounds that continuously fuels our creativity.
EG: What’s next for Mojave Grey? Where can your fans catch you next? What new milestones are you looking forward to in 2023
Mojave Grey: The horizon is brimming with potential. Fans can look forward to more immersive live shows, collaborations, and genre-bending tracks at the intersection of classic rock and modern electronic music. The next few months, and as we look ahead to 2024, are about scaling new heights and delivering music that pushes sonic boundaries.
