Steven Weston returns to home turf with his brand new EP Melt Air, released via Blank Dust on the 7th of October and follows the critically acclaimed Alter The Flow EP, released earlier this year on Anjunadeep. Taken from the EP, Hold Back will be released on the 2nd of September followed by the second single Connected on the 23rd of September.
The five-track EP sees Weston focusing more on the instrumental side of his practice, touching on a decidedly darker sound than its predecessors. The stuttering synths that open the first track set the stage before the arrival of the driving percussion and celestial tones.
The release’s only vocal collaboration comes in the second track, from London-based singer-songwriter Natalia Salter. ‘Natalia and I have worked together on a number of tracks for other artists over the last few years, so it was great to be able to work with her on one of my own.’
Connected is a densely layered mix of organic synth textures and propulsive drums, and it sees Weston refining the signature sound developed on his first EP. Eternal sees a further retreat from the club, with a four-minute meditation showcasing how one can turn a single analog synth sound into a living, breathing piece of work.
The EP is rounded off with Southsea, named, like his breakout single The Solent, for a place close to Weston’s heart. The skittering melodies swell throughout the track with snippets of choral voices swirling around the listener before the breakbeat crescendo.
