EG caught up with the ever-loose German duo Super Flu to learn more about their future performance at the DAY.MVS XL ’22 Festival, keep updated on all things Monaberry, the drop of their ‘Gargamel’ EP, and more.
EG: Hi Feliks! Hello Mathias! Welcome to EG. It’s a pleasure to have you here with us. Where are you based right now? How have you been?
Super Flu: Thanks for having us, it is great to be here. We are based in Halle, a small city 1 hour by train away from Berlin. Our office, studio, family, and friends are all here. Finally, we are back on the road, and working in the studio is productive, with a lot of output. So, we can’t complain.
EG: So, you guys are gearing up for the DAY.MVS XL Festival! How excited are you? What can fans expect from this particular performance?
Super Flu: We are more than happy to be back in San Diego for that great festival. As always, we will give 100% and play some nice tunes from friends and upcoming releases from our label Monaberry.
EG: What’s the difference between planning for a festival rather than a club? What is it exactly that has a direct impact on the performance?
Super Flu: The main difference is that a slot at a festival is planned. You have a fixed time and you have to be on point with your set and performance. A club is more intuitive and you can react directly to the crowd. You can improvise with your tracks. At a festival, the set is 99% planned. The people have the main impact on the performance. If you get the connection, everything will be easy and you will go with the flow.
EG: What other sets are you planning on catching? Any artists you’re looking forward to seeing?
Super Flu: We are arriving on Sunday and will miss half of the artists. But on Sunday, we are really looking forward to Overmono. These guys are huge and we really love the sound. Dixon, Guti, and Mind Against are well-known artists and we look forward to chatting with them a bit.

EG: By the way, congratulations on the recent drop of your ‘Gargamel’ EP on Monaberry! What has the reception been like?
Super Flu: The reception is huge. We got a lot of great feedback via our label promo. And before the official release, we got so many positive vibes from the people on the floors.
EG: What can your fans find on this one? Was there a specific inspiration narrative-wise?
Super Flu: The tracks are 100% Super Flu. We put a lot of energy and new production tools into it, but without losing the Super Flu vibe. During the process, we suddenly thought of the Smurfs and talked for half of the day about the strange living situation. On this day we decided to name the EP ‘Gargamel’.
EG: Summer’s here! What are you looking forwards to this season? Are there any activities to keep you entertained aside from the music?
Super Flu: To be honest, there isn’t much time left for us this summer. Festivals and traveling took the main time and if we are at home, we are in the studio hoping for some cloudy days to spend more time indoors. So, our summer activities are very few and uninspiring.
EG: The pandemic gave us all a chance to slow down and reassess. In the electronic music scene, it even gave us time for some much-needed discussions. What would you like to see more and less of?
Super Flu: At the moment, we are just happy to be back and do what we like and love. In the end, everything is built on contacts and those contacts didn’t change during the pandemic. So, we wouldn’t expect big changes in the industry. Would be great to get some more support from the government for our culture and more variety of lineups.

EG: What’s next for Super Flu and Monaberry? What particular milestones are you looking forwards to now?
Super Flu: Next to traveling and playing music, Monaberry is our main focus, every release is a small milestone. We have fixed releases until middle of next year with a release every three weeks. A lot of great artists and music will be released. A big thing for us is vinyl and we are searching now for a new distribution to be back in business.
